Upholstery

Skaïmangogrey

I think Jérôme found the right material to match the pinstripes cloth. In fact he used it for trimming the seats of a Beryl green car. So its green shade is most "Peppermint" than "Mango", and does not match with the westy interior color. But when when i lay a piece of material on a Seagull Grey area, it actually disapears drunk by the green-grey ! Just like the pinstripes cloth does on a Mango area !!!
So I played with the white balance of my camera to take these photosgraphs with a mango and seagull grey part. One balance is focused on a white paper sheet and the other is balanced yellow. I was amased how the three colors played together... Good job Jerôme !

Beam Works

DSC04981

DSC05038

The front beam is at Olivier's workshop for a welding job. My wife brung back the sprindles from Pascal's shop (Did you break your neck for reading his new catalog ???). I will order the machining of 4 bushings like I designed for Denis 's pick up and the calliper brackets will be missing.
Jérôme and I talked about modifing the front bench. So I am about to see how  it is possible to cut and weld the steel frame . And my Uncle will assume the wood base on this.
The westy project is on the big way these days, maybe it is because spring is comming ?

Upholstery

DSC02121

Hum thanks to the sample ordered previouly by Totof, I was certain of the perfect matching of the bench cloth according to body tones. But viewing twelve meters blasted me off. Woha, this kind of canvas will "deluxe" up the westy interior like Mango Beetles one. I do not know yet if seat bottoms and sides will be made in this cloth (like Ovals, i would say) or in a grey vinyl (like early '60s beetles). I scedule this brainstorming later. Nowadays, I am working on cab doors frames for the clean job, and on the front beam for the dirty job (the matter is to find a place with electricity where noise of the grinder is not a big problem...).

The first window of the bus closes nicely. Olivier painted inner window frames in Mango according to the inside color and outter frames match the upper body tone. Olivier's brainstorming about color coding could not issue on a grey frame seen inside ! I thought it might be a good idea before... And now when every window and pop out frame are painted by two tones, I really love it ! Actually, the vent window frame and the scrapping seal holder can not be painted in two tones. So we decided it has to be seagull grey. I think vent lock does the deal pretty good because of the ivory shade of the seagull grey.

Man at Work

For sure this day was an hard one. I even feel satisfied about things achieved today. Yes,  I am proud of it.

DSC00013

The chrome plated ring of the lid lock is now perfectly fitted... fitted for real ! Pretty cool ! I love this period part, it look so obsolete. Oh well, I test-fitted the rear apron too. These days I enjoy bolting little things, those things whitch make the bus looks like a rolling one. Small pleasures are definatly sweet !

Body Shop's X-mas tree !

A new year begins like the previous one finished... Primer and color.
Now, I focus on next jobs : front beam, rear axle, brake and upholstery. I feel a bit lost with all these jobs, I must admit. I will try to overpass step by step thanks to friend's help and my small aknowledge... What a challenge !!! ;-)

May 2008 brings you happyness,love and ca$h...

Mr Cab Driver

Olivier bolted and trimmed cab doors. This evening, he proudly presented his great job to Denis, Jerôme, Uncle Jeff and some Norvegian friends... Denis and I can not wait to take a picture of our Combis side by side but this time it was a bit hard.
We will schedule some project photoshots because paint flows these times... First, I have to scedule some work on this baby !!!

A picture of the moke up for you, my friends :

This Day Was Grey...

... Sea Gull Grey, of course. The beautyfull matching of two unglamourous colors... That is what I thought when I held two pieces of adesive paper, one coloured Mango and one Sea Gull. What a wedding !...

Feels like Christmas is early this year... Perhaps the whole job will be done before next year ? Hum... Time does not matter when you share these moments.

100% Mango ?

After my first visit, I realised that did not have a look to the engine bay. So during the second, I could check how far did Olivier go with his paint laquer. Every area whitch can be reach is covered by a glossy layer of Mango. It is far beyond my satisfaction ! I guess it will be a pleasure to look for fallen keys and have a look underneath the dashboard...
The drawback of this whole spraying is a little matter whitch is being fixed. Some hidden dust overpass the blowing/cleaning step. And some areas like the dashboard are a bit rought because some dust is trapped in the paint, did you noticed that by the first pictures ?

An happy customer...

The last coat of primer !!!

DSC02776

Here is the last coat of primer on the body shell ! black shadows were sprayed in order to be able to see the progress of the final sanding.
We tried to find how the front bench does fit the cab. It was so hard to find where we have exactly to drill holes for side brackets of flipping cushion. I enjoyed a lot playing with it, I must admit...

Westy Restoration update

Some job has been accomplished these days on the westy. I am glad to see the inner lid is nearly finished. Some sanding and fine sandblasting has been done too. The roof needs some care. A primering session is scheduled for a near future, Great !!!

The lid is smoothly frenched nearly like if it was a factory one. I am very satisfied !

Just a picture from my latest visit at the body shop... The Westy is now parked chose the wall for a while... A project without sense keeps the guys busy these days...

The front panel is now pretty straight, just need some care, a gentle sanding. I plan to write a "Nose Story" when the work will be accomplished. ;-)

SOVIETIC TOOLS

Olivier was performing a noisy nose job when I came into the bodyshop. The steel has been stripped to the bone because shadows of previous bumps were hidden behind a generous layer of filler. Of course it should stay for years and years with out falling off, but it is not Olivier 's cup of tea. It's an oldschool guy prefering to use spoon and hammer. I was astonished by his work accomplished. The lower part of the nose is feeling the factory shape again. Thanks Olivier and please don't stooooooooooooooooooop !

D'Oh !

I was very surprised when I saw  both side panels primered ! Epoxy primer is a strong guarantee counters rust. The body shaper plans to cover this primer with a polyester primer. This last coat will be carefully sanded for smooth and straight panels.

The surface rust you see on the windshield area is caused by the acid used to prepare the surface to be recovered by tin. I will be erased by a light buffing...

First Welds

After the sandblasting, the main task consisted to restore doors, lids, and hatch. So the body worker carefully stripped it to the metal and begun the see what were wrong. In fact, nothing was really bad, the rear lid claimed redone tappered holes to properly fix its hinges. A bit of tin was applied along the lid bottom to prevent rust.

The roof lid has been flatened, the factory spot-welds made it not very straight.

The hatch is in pretty good shape, only its hinge required a litte work. Cargo doors were previouly restored and the job was correctly achived,  they close fine when hinges trimmed. But they do not lock because holes on the floor were not located accuratly after the rocker welding.

The biggest piece of work will be the adjustement of cab doors. The previous welder

fixed so baddy rust holes that door bottoms are in wrong shape. That is to say, it needs to be cut and changed for new ones.

Now, some openings are primmered... And I feel quite happy to see parts ready to be painted !!!

Sand Blasting !

After the blast when we learned the budget of the body work, comes the time of the sand blasting ! The boss previously inspected carrefully the entire body, so we discover nothing we didn't suspect. The bare metal is here, the project is on the way...

Did you expect some tin here ? It seems to be made at the factory because on the opposite side the same area is filled by tin... Do you have inquires on this mystery ?

DSCF0514

As a conclusion, an important step is done and every unperfect area is quoted on the budget. Fortunately, the shaper can give up every fault of the shell... It 's just a question of time !

Next step, peeling off the several coats of paints on the rear hatch, the decklid, and the toplid.
